Moving Packing List: What to Leave Off

Last updated 3 months ago

When you are packing for a home or business move, you may want to leave nothing behind or overlooked. Some things, though, may not be appropriate to pack or move on your own. Talk to your moving company about what to leave out and how to pack unusual items in order to protect your possessions and make your move more comfortable.

  • Daily Items: Instead of packing essential items in boxes, have each family member pack their own overnight bag to take with them. This bag can include toiletries, extra clothing, medications, battery chargers and other items that make life more comfortable. By packing these things in separate bags, you will have access to the comforts of home even while you are still unpacking boxes.
  • Dangerous Items: Hazardous items should not be packed with the rest of your belongings during a move. Anything that is flammable or explosive—such as fuel, oil, aerosols, fireworks, and ammunition—should not be on your moving packing list. Similarly, toxic or corrosive substances like acid, paint thinners, insecticides, and household cleaners cannot be packed or shipped. Flammable and explosive items pose a risk to everyone in the area, and corrosive or toxic liquids can damage property and produce hazardous fumes. Before you move, offer any items that could be use useful to neighbors or friends and take whatever you can’t give away to a waste center for responsible disposal.
  • Living Things: Plants and animals require special care when being moved and will not fare well in the back of a moving truck. Arrange to give away houseplants or take them with you in your personal vehicle, and be sure that pets are given proper water, shelter, and attention on the day of the move.
